What to Look for in a Private Investor

Here are a few things you should look for in a private investor.

The first thing you should look for in a private investor is where he occupies within the market. It's no good if your business is in technology while they specialize in retail it's a far better idea to seek investment from someone in the same area as you.

Do your research and look into his background and business history, including the type of investments your private investor made and how successful he was. As with any field, some private investors will be better than others, so it's wise to seek out the ones with the most experience and success.

You should look for the amount of money your private investor is willing to invest, along with how much of the company they want to take. If you're not happy with the percentage they're after, don't accept it, but bear in mind the advantages an investor can bring before you decline.

Also consider the route they tend to take with their businesses. If your private investor has a tendency to get his return through the sale of the business, but you have no intention of selling your own, it would be wise to look elsewhere.

Just as important as the business side of things is the personality of the private investor themselves. It's no good having a business partner who you can't get on with this will lead to a fraught relationship, which will not only make working together difficult but could also jeopardize the success of the business.

As you can see, there are a number of things you should look for in a private investor. But, as long as you make the right choice and attract the best people, securing private investment can be hugely beneficial.
